Actuarial Science

Actuarial science uses mathematics and statistics to measure and manage financial risk, mainly in insurance and pensions. It focuses on estimating the cost of uncertain future events, such as illness or changes in life expectancy.

A typical problem is calculating how much a pension fund needs today to cover future obligations. Actuaries use probability models and demographic data to project how long people will live and how large the payments will be.

Background

Actuarial science is concerned with the financial consequences of risk. In insurance, that means pricing policies correctly and making sure companies hold enough reserves to pay future claims. In pensions, it means ensuring that funds can meet their long-term payment obligations as the population ages and interest rates change. The field relies heavily on probability and statistics, using data on past events to estimate the likelihood and cost of future ones.

An actuarial programme covers probability, statistics, and financial mathematics. Core topics include life tables, which model mortality and survival rates, and interest rate theory, which determines how money changes in value over time. Students also study risk theory, which deals with the distribution of claims and the likelihood of large losses. In the Netherlands, actuarial education is structured around professional exams set by the Royal Dutch Actuarial Association (Koninklijk Actuarieel Genootschap, AG), which students typically begin during or after their degree.

Actuarial skills are most in demand in insurance companies, pension funds, and financial regulators. In the Netherlands, the sector is significant: Dutch pension funds manage some of the largest asset pools in the world relative to the size of the economy. Actuaries also work at De Nederlandsche Bank and the Autoriteit Financiële Markten, where they assess whether institutions hold sufficient reserves. Some move into broader risk management, asset-liability modelling, or consulting roles.
