Data Science

Data science is the study of how to extract meaningful information from data. It combines statistics, programming, and domain knowledge to find patterns, build predictive models, and support decision-making.

A typical problem is predicting which customers are likely to cancel a subscription. Data scientists use historical data on customer behaviour to build a model that identifies patterns associated with cancellation, which an organisation can then act on.

Background

Data science combines statistics, programming, and domain expertise to extract information from data and support decisions. The field covers the full process: collecting and cleaning data, building models that identify patterns or make predictions, and presenting findings in a way that can be acted on. It draws from statistics and computer science, and is applied across almost every industry where large amounts of data are available.

A data science programme covers statistics, machine learning, and programming. Statistical methods such as regression and hypothesis testing form the foundation. Machine learning extends these with algorithms that learn from data without being explicitly programmed, including decision trees, neural networks, and clustering methods. Programming in Python or R is central to the field. Students also study data engineering topics such as databases and data pipelines, which are needed to work with real-world data at scale.

Data science roles exist across a wide range of sectors, including financial services, technology, retail, healthcare, and government. In the Netherlands, large employers include banks, insurers, logistics companies, and technology firms. Roles vary from analyst-focused positions, where the emphasis is on interpreting data and communicating findings, to more engineering-focused roles, where the focus is on building and deploying machine learning systems. The field overlaps with econometrics, statistics, and software engineering, and graduates often move between these areas.
