Operations Research

Operations research uses mathematical methods to find optimal solutions to complex decision problems. It is applied wherever organisations need to allocate resources, plan logistics, or schedule operations under constraints.

A typical problem is scheduling staff across a hospital to meet patient demand while staying within budget and working-time rules. Operations researchers formulate the problem mathematically and use optimisation algorithms to find the best feasible solution.

Background

Operations research is concerned with finding the best decision when resources are limited and constraints apply. It provides mathematical tools for problems too complex to solve by trial and error. Applications include routing vehicles, scheduling staff, managing supply chains, and allocating hospital beds. In each case, the problem is expressed as an optimisation model: a mathematical objective to maximise or minimise, subject to a set of constraints.

An operations research degree covers linear programming, integer programming, and network optimisation. Linear programming finds the best solution when the objective and constraints can be expressed as linear functions. Integer programming handles cases where decisions must be whole numbers, such as how many vehicles to deploy. Simulation is used when uncertainty makes exact methods impractical. The degree also covers probability, statistics, and programming in Python or a specialised solver language such as CPLEX or Gurobi.

Operations research graduates work in logistics and transport, healthcare, financial services, and government. In the Netherlands, the field has a strong presence in logistics and transport planning, where port operators, airline planners, and parcel delivery firms use operations research to manage large and complex scheduling problems. Consulting firms also employ operations researchers to help clients redesign processes and reduce costs. The field connects closely to data science, where machine learning and optimisation methods are increasingly combined.
