Operations research (OR) focuses on solving complex decision problems using mathematics and logic. It helps find the best way to organize processes, allocate resources, or plan operations efficiently.

OR is often about optimization: choosing the best solution from many possibilities while meeting certain conditions. For example, Dutch railway companies use operations research to schedule trains and staff in a way that minimizes delays and costs while following strict rules and limits.
