Projects

Project type

Economic

Economical projects involve using quantitative methods to analyse economic problems and inform policy decisions. The work combines data analysis, economic modelling, and research skills. You find these projects at government ministries, research institutes, and consultancies that advise on public policy.

In this type of project, you use economic and statistical methods to answer questions about how policies work. That might mean modelling the expected effect of a proposed measure, evaluating whether an intervention achieved its goals, or producing a research report that maps a social or economic problem.

Background

Governments and public organisations need evidence to make good decisions. They need to understand what problems exist, what causes them, and whether their interventions are working. Economical projects provide that evidence. Some projects look forward, modelling the effects of proposed measures or mapping a problem that policy needs to address. Others look back, assessing whether a policy that has already been implemented achieved its goals.

The daily work involves gathering and analysing data, building economic or statistical models, reviewing existing literature, and writing reports or briefings for decision-makers. The output often needs to be accessible to people who are not economists or statisticians, which means writing clearly and being honest about what the analysis can and cannot show.

The shared tools are R, Python, Stata, and Excel. Econometric methods are central to the quantitative work, including causal inference techniques for evaluating policies. Knowledge of the relevant policy domain matters as much as technical skill: you need to understand the context to ask the right questions and interpret the results correctly. The work connects to the Policy Analyst and Economic Researcher roles and is most common in the Government, Research Institutes, and Consultancy sectors.
