Asset Management
Asset management is the business of investing money on behalf of clients. Asset managers pool capital from pension funds, insurers, and private investors and invest it in financial markets with the goal of generating returns.
In this sector you might build quantitative models to support investment decisions, analyse the risk and return of a portfolio, or develop systematic strategies based on market data.
Asset managers are responsible for other people's money. Their job is to invest it according to a mandate, which defines what they can invest in, how much risk they can take, and what return they are expected to deliver. Mandates range from conservative fixed income portfolios for pension funds to higher-risk equity or alternative investment strategies.
The daily work depends on the role. Portfolio managers make investment decisions. Quantitative analysts and researchers build models to support those decisions. Risk managers monitor whether portfolios stay within their mandates and measure exposure to market, credit, and liquidity risk. Operations and data teams make sure the infrastructure behind the investments runs correctly.
The main tools are Python and R for quantitative analysis, Bloomberg for market data, and Excel for reporting and modelling. SQL is used to work with large datasets of prices, returns, and positions. Knowledge of financial instruments such as equities, bonds, and derivatives is important in most roles. Statistical and econometric methods are widely used, particularly in quantitative and risk roles.
The work environment is analytical and detail-oriented. Decisions are backed by data and models, and the stakes are high because the capital being managed belongs to clients. In the Netherlands, the sector is concentrated in Amsterdam and includes both large independent asset managers and the investment arms of banks and insurers. The sector connects closely to the Financial sector more broadly, and roles here overlap with Quantitative Analyst, Risk Manager, and Data Scientist roles.
