Roles

Role type

Data

Data roles use data to help organisations make better decisions. They range from building the systems that store data to analysing it, modelling it, and turning it into recommendations. These roles appear in almost every sector.

In this type of role, you work with datasets to answer questions that matter to the organisation. That might mean pulling data from different systems, building a predictive model, or creating a dashboard that tracks performance.

Background

Organisations collect large amounts of data but need people who can make it useful. Data roles fill that gap, each from a different angle. Some focus on the infrastructure that stores and moves data. Others focus on analysing it, building predictive models, or using quantitative methods to improve how a business operates. Together, these roles cover the full process from raw data to decisions.

The daily work depends on the specific role, but it also differs between organisations. A data analyst at a bank does different work than a data analyst at a logistics company. At a bank, the focus might be on reporting financial metrics or monitoring risk indicators. At a logistics company, it might be on tracking delivery performance or optimising routes. The size of the organisation matters too. At smaller companies, one person often covers tasks that would be split across multiple roles at a larger company.

Across all data roles, you work with datasets, spot errors, and translate results into something useful for colleagues who are not technical. Getting the numbers right before they reach decision-makers is a core part of every data role. So is being able to explain what the data shows and what it does not show.

The shared tools are SQL for accessing data, Python or R for analysis and modelling, and Excel for quick calculations. BI tools like Power BI or Tableau are common for reporting and dashboards. Statistical knowledge, the ability to write basic code, and clear written and verbal communication are relevant across all data roles.
