E-commerce & Retail

The e-commerce and retail sector covers businesses that sell goods to consumers, both online and in physical stores. Retailers collect large amounts of data on customer behaviour, purchasing patterns, and inventory, and use it to make decisions about pricing, assortment, and marketing.

In this sector you might build a demand forecast for a product category, analyse the effect of a promotional campaign, or develop a pricing model that responds to competitor prices.

Background

Retailers operate on thin margins and need to make many decisions quickly, from how to price a product to how much stock to hold. Data and quantitative methods help make those decisions more reliable. E-commerce companies have access to especially rich data, since every click, search, and purchase is recorded.

The daily work involves working with transaction data, customer data, and web or app behaviour data. Common tasks include demand forecasting, customer segmentation, pricing analysis, and measuring the impact of marketing campaigns. A/B testing is widely used to evaluate changes to pricing, product pages, or promotions.

The main tools are Python and SQL for analysis, and BI tools like Power BI or Tableau for reporting. Statistical modelling and machine learning are both applied regularly. Knowledge of pricing economics and consumer behaviour is useful context.

The work environment in e-commerce is typically fast-paced, with frequent product and pricing changes. In traditional retail, the pace is slower but the operational complexity is high. In the Netherlands, both large national retailers and the local operations of international e-commerce companies are active. The sector connects to Digital Services & Platforms and to roles like Data Scientist, Data Analyst, and Operations Analyst.
