IT projects involve building and managing the systems and infrastructure that organisations use to store, process, and analyse data. The work is technical and sits at the foundation of most data-driven work. You find these projects across almost every sector, either run by internal IT and data teams or by consultancies brought in to build or improve data infrastructure.
In this type of project, you build or improve the systems that store and process data. That might mean setting up a data pipeline, defining how data should be structured and governed, or building analytics tools that help colleagues get answers from the data.
Organisations increasingly depend on data to run their operations and make decisions. IT projects build and maintain the infrastructure that makes that possible. Some projects focus on the underlying systems: moving data between platforms, cleaning and structuring it, or defining how it should be stored and governed. Others focus on what can be built on top of that infrastructure: analytics tools, dashboards, and models that support decision-making.
The daily work varies by project type. On infrastructure projects, you build pipelines, design data models, and set up systems that process and store data reliably. On analytics projects, you develop models or tools that help users get insight from the data. In both cases, much of the work involves understanding the current state of the data, identifying problems, and building solutions that can be maintained by others.
The shared tools are Python, SQL, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud. Attention to data quality, documentation, and maintainability matters across all IT projects. The work connects to the Data Engineer and Data Analyst roles and appears across all sectors. On larger projects, the work is split across multiple roles. On smaller projects, one person often covers several of these areas.
