Data Strategy
A data strategy project defines how an organisation should use data to create value. This type of project is often run by consultants working with senior management.
In this project you might assess the current state of an organisation's data capabilities, define a roadmap for building a data platform, or develop a framework for prioritising data initiatives across different business units.
The goal of a data strategy project is to help an organisation move from ad hoc data use to a deliberate approach that creates consistent value. Many organisations invest in data tools and people without a clear direction, which leads to duplicated effort and missed opportunities. A data strategy provides that direction by connecting data investments to business goals.
The daily work involves interviewing stakeholders, reviewing the current data landscape, identifying gaps and priorities, and synthesising findings into a clear set of recommendations. The output is usually a strategic document or roadmap that senior management can use to make investment decisions. The work requires both analytical skills and the ability to communicate with non-technical audiences.
The main tools are Excel and PowerPoint for structuring and presenting analysis. Familiarity with data architecture concepts, governance frameworks, and common technology platforms is useful for making credible recommendations. The work connects to the Strategist and Data Scientist roles and is most common in the Consultancy sector, where firms are hired to assess and advise on data capabilities across industries.
