Regulators & Supervisors
Regulators and supervisors are public authorities that set and enforce rules for organisations in a specific industry. They monitor compliance, investigate breaches, and take action when organisations do not meet their obligations. In the Netherlands, key regulators include De Nederlandsche Bank, the AFM, and the ACM
In this sector you might analyse data to detect market manipulation, model the financial health of a supervised institution, or evaluate whether a market is functioning competitively.
Regulators exist to make sure that markets and institutions operate fairly and safely. They set rules, monitor compliance, and intervene when organisations fall short. The work is analytical and legally grounded. Regulators need to understand the industries they supervise in detail, which means quantitative skills are valuable, especially where the regulated entities use complex models or manage financial risk.
The daily work involves analysing data submitted by regulated organisations, conducting investigations, writing assessments, and developing policy recommendations. In financial supervision, this might mean reviewing a bank's internal risk models or assessing whether an insurer holds sufficient capital. In market regulation, it might mean analysing pricing behaviour or market concentration.
The main tools are R, Python, and Excel for data analysis. Knowledge of the regulatory frameworks relevant to the specific regulator is important. For financial regulators, this includes Basel IV, Solvency II, and MiFID. For competition authorities, it includes EU competition law and economic analysis of market power.
The work environment is structured and process-driven. Decisions have legal consequences, so documentation and rigour matter. In the Netherlands, financial regulators like DNB and the AFM are well-regarded employers. The sector connects closely to Government and to roles like Risk Manager, Economic Researcher, and Policy Analyst.
