Operations Strategy
An operations strategy project involves assessing how an organisation runs its core activities and deciding where to make changes. This type of project appears in logistics, manufacturing, and consultancy.
In this project you might map a logistics network to find where costs can be reduced, analyse production throughput to identify bottlenecks, or evaluate options for restructuring a delivery operation.
The goal of an operations strategy project is to identify how an organisation can run more efficiently and make a concrete plan for getting there. This is different from day-to-day operational work: the focus is on stepping back, looking at the whole system, and deciding what to change. The work is often triggered by a cost problem, a quality issue, or a major change in the business environment.
The daily work involves mapping existing processes, collecting and analysing operational data, identifying the biggest sources of inefficiency, and modelling the impact of different improvement options. You work closely with the people who run the operations, since they have knowledge of the process that does not appear in the data. Writing up findings and presenting recommendations clearly to management is a central part of the role.
The main tools are Excel and Python for analysis, and process mapping tools for documenting how operations currently work. Optimisation and simulation methods are relevant when evaluating specific improvement options. The work connects to the Operations Analyst and Strategist roles and appears most often in Transportation & Logistics, Mobility, and Consultancy.
