Operations Analyst
An operations analyst looks at how a business runs and finds ways to make it more efficient. They analyse processes, identify bottlenecks, and recommend changes. This role appears in logistics, financial services, healthcare, and large corporates.
In this role you might model a supply chain to reduce costs, analyse staffing levels at a call centre, or map out a process to find where time is being lost.
The goal of an operations analyst is to help an organisation use its resources better. That might mean reducing costs, shortening wait times, or improving the reliability of a process.
Most of the daily work involves collecting data about how a process works, analysing where it breaks down or slows down, and building models to test potential improvements. You often work closely with the teams responsible for the process, since they know where the real problems are. Presenting recommendations clearly is an important part of the job, as the people who make decisions are not always technical.
The main tools are Excel, SQL, and Python or R for more complex analysis. Simulation and optimisation methods are common, especially in roles with a strong operations research component. In some organisations, tools like Power BI or Tableau are used to track process performance over time.
The work culture is often project-based. You move from one process or problem to the next. At consulting firms, you may work across different clients and industries. At larger organisations, the focus is usually on one business area. In the Netherlands, this role is common at logistics companies, financial institutions, and government bodies. It connects closely to roles in Strategy Consulting and to quantitative roles like Data Analyst or Quantitative Analyst.
