Role type

Finance

Finance roles focus on managing, analysing, and pricing financial risk. They appear at banks, insurers, pension funds, and asset managers.

In this type of role, you work with financial data to measure, model, or manage risk and value. That might mean pricing a financial instrument, monitoring a portfolio's exposure, or building a model to estimate long-term liabilities.

Background

Financial institutions need people who can put numbers on uncertainty, price complex instruments, and make sure the organisation does not take on more risk than it can handle. Finance roles exist to do exactly that. Regulators also require financial institutions to demonstrate that their risks are well understood and managed, which adds a structural demand for quantitative expertise in this field.

A Risk Manager monitors exposures and reports to regulators. A Trader makes decisions about buying and selling assets. An Actuary models long-term liabilities for an insurer or pension fund. A Quantitative Analyst builds the models that others rely on. What these roles share is a need to work with financial data, understand uncertainty, and communicate findings clearly.

The same role can also look different across organisations. A risk manager at a small insurer may cover multiple risk types and work closely with management. At a large bank, the role is more specialised and embedded in a larger team with strict regulatory reporting requirements.

The shared tools are Python or R for modelling, Excel for analysis and reporting, and SQL for data extraction. Bloomberg is widely used for market data. Knowledge of financial products and regulatory frameworks is relevant across most finance roles. Strong mathematical intuition matters more here than in most other role types.
