A consultant is hired to solve a specific problem for a client. The work is project-based: you are brought in for a defined task, deliver a result, and move on. The content depends entirely on the type of consulting.
In this type of role, you analyse a client's situation and produce a recommendation or deliverable. That might mean building a financial model, redesigning a process, or evaluating a strategy.
Consulting is a way of working more than it is a specific job. A consultant might build a financial model, redesign a process, evaluate a policy, or help an organisation get more out of its data. What these projects have in common is the structure: a defined problem, a client, and a clear deliverable. This is what distinguishes consulting from most in-house roles, where you work on the same organisation's problems over a longer period.
Because the work is project-based, consultants work across many different clients and industries. The content changes often. You need to get up to speed quickly, ask the right questions early, and produce results under time pressure. This is why consulting is often misunderstood as just giving advice. In practice, much of the work is analytical and hands-on.
The type of work depends heavily on the specialism. A strategy consultant helps clients decide where to focus. A risk consultant helps financial institutions manage and report risk. A data consultant helps organisations get more out of their data. Each type draws on different technical skills, but all require the ability to structure a problem, do rigorous analysis, and present findings clearly to senior stakeholders.
In the Netherlands, consulting work is concentrated at large international firms and at smaller boutique firms that specialise in a specific domain or sector. Many consultants move in-house after a few years, applying the same skills within a single organisation.
